The author discusses the balance between privacy and security in the light of a U.S. district court decision on security pat-downs of people entering a stadium. The pat-downs were found to be unnecessarily intrusive, given the perceived risk, though the court noted that magnetometer searches might have been acceptable. The question of how proactive the government can be in preventing terrorism, without infringing privacy, is raised.
