Stress fractures are a common injury seen in athletes and military recruits. A high index of suspicion, a thorough history and physical, and proper imaging studies, are critical to making a correct diagnosis. Most stress fractures heal with restriction from the precipitating event. Coaches, athletes, and parents should be educated on techniques to avoid stress fractures. These include avoiding abrupt increases in activity, adequate rest periods and avoiding year-round weight-bearing exercise.
