AN UNUSUAL CASE OF NIGHTMARES WITH GALANTAMINE

Abstract

Presents case of a 77 year old man with medical history of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) for 2 years. Considering that his MCI had progressed to dementia, Mr. A was started on galantamine extended release (ER) 8mg a day. Initially, he tolerated galantamine ER well and was without any side effects, but after 3 weeks, he reported having nightmares and asked about alternatives to galantamine. His galantamine ER was stopped, as did the nightmares. Over the next week, his galantamine was held, with no recurrence of nightmares. Nightmares occurred when galantamine was used and resolved once galantamine was discontinued, although it is unclear why there was a lag of 3 weeks before nightmares occurred with initial galantamine use but occurred within 3 days of later use.
