Adapted clinical practice guideline: Pain management in neonates and Infants

Abstract

The article presents another adapted clinical practice guideline (CPG) which is focused on assessment and management of pain in neonates and infants. The process of adaptation of foreign clinical recommendations was again realized according to the ADAPTE Collaboration, Version 2.0 just as in the case of the previous practice guidelines published in Pediatrie pro praxi (No. 4/2015, No. 1/2016, No. 4/2017, No. 2/2018, No. 5/2018, No. 2/2019 and No. 5/2019). On the basis of a literature search the existing clinical practice guidelines and other recommendations were identified and analysed methodologically and then a draft of a new, adapted clinical practice guideline was developed. Altogether 556 nurses and 4 physicians from all 12 perinatology centres in the Czech Republic took part in continuous consultation process. The resulting clinical practice guideline was divided into 5 parts (introduction into the issue, methods of assessment of pain manifestations, frequency of assessment, non-pharmacological methods of pain management and pharmacological methods of pain management) and appendices containing the most frequently used scales for assessment of acute and long-lasting pain in newborns and infants. The aim of the guideline is to provide the competent health care workers with practical information concerning pain assessment and non-pharmacological and pharmacological pain management.
