Abstract

It is presented an investigation of the medicinal plants, known by names of existing commercial medicines, used by seven communities of Xerém district in state of Rio de Janeiro. Ethnobotanical information obtained by interviewing local people revealed eight medicinal plants. Samples of all species were obtained, mounted as specimens, determined and deposited in the herbarium of Museu Nacional ®. The biolological activity of each taxon as well as the chemical and pharmacological properties of the encountered plant species are compared with those of the homonymous commercial medicines.
