Pedestrian as basis for sustainable urban mobility in Latin America: a vision to build cities of the future

Abstract

Mobility is the nodal axis of urban development. From a sustainability paradigm, the use of alternative modes and public transportation has been implemented as a model that integrates economic, social and environmental objectives. For their part, the role of social collectives on the actions of local and national governments have promoted policies that aim to respond to people's need for mobility, without losing sight of the construction of cities for the future. This essay proposes a discussion around the role of pedestrians, based on the conference No. 4 of REHVIF international research network "inhabiting the cities of the future”. Around this debate, a theoretical review of sustainable urban mobility in Latin America and the Caribbean is presented and key elements are proposed for broader discussions around pedestrians in urban mobility systems but also the social, economic and governmental actors involved in decision making.
