Abstract

The author aims to analyze pelota as a framework for concepts of meaning and worldview. Cultural meanings merge at a juncture, bringing about the possibility of change within an otherwise resilient pattern of communion between players and spectators. The author contends that pelota has had a central role in the formation and reproduction of Basques' collective consciousness - a ritual exercise, nowadays turned into an industrialized sport, that represents an expressive act of cultural founding while transmitting elementary narratives of the bond of identity.
