Application of gas pressure type balanced head stationary hanging mercury drop electrode to anodic stripping voltammetry

Abstract

The conventional balanced head stationary hanging mercury drop electrode (BHMDE) was modified to the gas pressure type. This electrode was applied to the determination of trace amount of elements in several alcoholic drinks. At the nitrogen gas pressure of 490 mmHg, the mercury drop time and mercury flow rate were 138 s and 1.922X10-2 mg/s respectively, and the surface area of mercury drop was 2.74X10-2 cm2 at the mercury push out time of 30 s. The reproducibility of the size of the mercury drop was examined by measuring the reproducibility of wave height of the cathodic oscillographic polarograms of cadmium (II) ion: ∆ values of ten replicate determination of the surface area of mercury were 0.76 and 0.78 respectively, being slightly greater than 0.40, 0.62 and 0.60 reported in the previous paper. The concentrations of Cu, Pb, Cd and Zn in the alcoholic drinks were determined by the standard addition method in anodic stripping voltammetry after the samples being decomposed by the acid digestion with HC1O4, HNO3, and H2SO4 or by the low temperature ashing.
