Abstract

Cataracts are the most common ophthalmologic disease that causes vision loss in the world. Likewise, of the various types of cataract existing, the most frequent is senile or degenerative. The disease is that the lens becomes increasingly opaque making it difficult to see until it causes blindness. The mostfrequent cases are seen in elderly people and may gradually affect both eyes. The aim of this article is to systematize information about the description of its main characteristics, etiology, epidemiology and appropriate treatments for this ophthalmological disease. A critical review of scientific documents andpublications was carried out. There is a consensus in the scientific community about the usefulness of surgical treatment in the care of the disease.
