Abstract

Leaves are protected by the cuticle, stomata and other epidermal structures against the uncontrolled exchange of matter with the environment. Nevertheless, solutes such as mineral fertilizers, biostimulants or pesticides may penetrate the external plant surface Meanwhile, foliar application of plant nutrients is a common agricultural practice, especially for micronutrients. This chapter summarizes the current knowledge about the barrier properties of both the cuticle and stomata against the penetration of solutes. Practical aspects of foliar fertilization are outlined.
