Abstract
This text addresses the understanding of addictive illness, its management, and its place in research and social perspective. Modalities available for managing substance abuse are reviewed. The mechanisms underlying addictive illness and the scientific basis of treatment are discussed. Diagnostic procedures, prevention, and treatment outcome research are presented. This volume is designed to serve clinicians in practice and researchers concerned with addiction, as well as trainees in psychiatry, general medicine, and other health professions.
