Abstract

The following analyzes studies the internationalization of public streaming platforms in North America, considering it as an opportunity to contribute to cultural diversity globally. The geographical expansion of public platforms depends on their objectives, operating costs and the legal conditions of the contents. This article identifies five modes of internationalization of platforms in the region: 1) monetization, 2) connection with diaspora/migrants, 3) international diffusion, 4) involuntary internationalization and 5) blocking of content abroad. It was found that: i) the greatest obstacles to internationalization are the management of rights and the costs of the distribution and promotion infrastructure; ii) that the former limitations and language barriers make the availability of public streaming platforms scarce among North American countries; and iii) that the method of international diffusion, which deliberately seeks to make foreigners aware of their own culture, is incipient and remains outside of state policies.
