Abstract

A clear understanding of the relation of hiatus hernia to symptomatology is particularly important for doctors treating elderly patients. This review considers the significance of the hiatus hernia in the light of recent investigations into the physiology of the cardia and the mechanisms for the prevention of the gastroesophageal reflux.
