Abstract

A score of empirical research shows that values and attitudes such as trust in others, empathy, respect, cooperation, etc. can have a positive impact on interpersonal relations as well as on social life itself. They have the power to influence public policy in domains as diverse as economy, health, education, family, employment, environment, justice and even international relations. This article details this argument in three areas : humanist education, restorative justice and 'positive' organisations. It concludes on the right attitude to adopt with respect to "lone rangers," following Braithwaite's regulative pyramid model.
