Abstract

A simple and sensitive method is presented for the electrochemical determination of berberine based on a nano-Na-montmorillonite (nano-Na- MMT) clay-modified carbon paste electrode. The electrochemical oxidation and adsorption behavior of berberine was studied at the proposed electrode by linear sweep voltammetry in acetate buffer (0.2 M, pH 5.6). A differential pulse anodic stripping voltammetric procedure was developed for the determination of the drug. A good linear relationship between the oxidation peak current magnitude and the concentration of berberine was observed in the range from 1.0 to 18.0 μg mL-1 with a detection limit of 0.07 μg mL -1 and a quantification limit of 0.24 μg mL-1. The proposed method was successfully applied to the determination of berberine in pharmaceutical tablets. Copyright (C)2013 SCS.
