Abstract

The study aims to detect the insulin-like protein and determine theactive compounds in Bauhiniavariegata L. leaves ethanolic extracts thathelp in reducing the blood glucose levels for white albino mice.Thechemical detection of leaves ethanolic extract revealed the presenceof tannins, terpenes, steroids, andflavonoids as active compounds. Highperformance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis method, usingC18column resulted in presence of insulin-like protein in the leavesextracts. Results showed significant reduction ofblood glucose levelsafter 3 days of the treatment, and high reduction obtained after 6, 9,12 days as comparedwith the human swine insulin used as a control. Itwas concluded that the crude ethanolic extracts and thepartial purifiedinsulin of B. variegata was used to examine the existence ofinsulin-like protein in this plant. This study is an attempt to reportplant insulin that may be useful to the student in the field ofpharmacology andtherapeutics to develop alternative medicine to curediabetes in human.Key words: Bauhinia, Active compounds, HPLC analysis
