Yaw-sway-roll coupling motion of a ship is investigated on the basis of captive model tank tests. A single-crew, high-speed container ship has been chosen as a typical type for the study. The smaller metacentric height naturally results in the heavier coupling of roll into yaw and sway, which affects maneuverability significantly: turning performance is improved by the coupling effect, and course-stability and quick response to steering are reduced.
