Abstract

This lecture (presented at the Workshop on Interfaces of Agriculture, Food Science and Nutrition, at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ibadan, Nigeria, 14-16 Dec. 1976) reviews the post-harvest losses of Nigerian food crops, i.e. roots and tubers (yams, cassava, sweet potatoes, cocoyams), plantains, fruits and vegetables, cereals and legumes caused by pest infestation (microorganisms, insects and rodents) and by metabolic and physiological activities. The effects of environmental and storage conditions, bruising, packaging and handling are briefly discussed. The need for appropriate technology is emphasized. *Copyright (1978) International Food Information Service (IFIS Publishing). All Rights Reserved.
