Abstract

General considerations related to the welding of plastics are followed by a review of methods and equipment used in plastics welding technology. In addition to cementing, hot gas welding of plastics can be considered as the most significant joining method. Primary uses exist in the construction of chemical process equipment, in joining pipes from rigid PVC, in butt-welding plasticized PVC flooring, in the manufacture of plastics machine parts, etc. Fr Heated tool welding of plastics is mostly carried out on special equipment. Uses include the assembly of the most varied types of shape. Frictional welding of plastics is carried out in high-volume production on special machinery, with at least one of the two parts having to be of rotational-symmetric design. The main use of frictional welding is in the construction of plastics process equipment where flanges and flanged bushes are connected to the pipe ends by frictional welding. High frequency welding of plastics is a special technique and predominantly used with plasticized PVC film. Ultrasonic welding of plastics is mostly used for special applications such as the closing of collapsible tubes from plasticized PVC.
