Piloting an E-journals Preservation Registry Service (PEPRS)

Abstract

A number of organizations now take responsibility for preserving e-journals, but there exists an overall lack of information about where e-journals are archived and what arrangements exist for access. Piloting an E-journals Preservation Registry Service (PEPRS) is a two-year funded project with the objective of exploring the provision of pilot services to fill this information gap. This presentation discussed the genesis of the project and the major players involved in it. Also covered were some of the issues and questions that have arisen such as what data to record and how to record it and what journals to include in the registry. A first pass pilot demonstrator is scheduled to be available in October 2009 to allow time for testing and evaluation and release of a system to undergo external testing in February 2010. The creation of this registry should be of interest to any library that pays for access to e-journals, because that access is not necessarily guaranteed over time. © The North American Serials Interest Group, Inc.
