Abstract

With an increasing demand for laser welding applications related to e‐mobility, the range of material combinations, system setups, wavelengths used, beam qualities and frequencies has risen drastically. There is a multitude of different processes and parameters that all aim at the same goal: hundreds of connectors in batteries, electric drives, and cable connections must be functional for years in each car. Not a single one may fail or increase its electrical resistance and all of them need to be welded and inspected in the shortest time. Online process monitoring systems contribute to achieve these ambitious goals, so their capabilities and limitations as well as some vivid examples are discussed in this article.
