Abstract

In this work, we report for the first time an investigation about the use of electrolytes based on 1,1,2,2-tetramethoxyethane (tetramethoxyglyoxal, TMG) and 1,1,2,2-tetraethoxyethane (tetraethoxyglyoxal, TEG) in combination with amorphous carbon materials. We showed that at room temperature the performance of soft and hard carbon electrodes in these alternative electrolytes is comparable to that obtained in conventional electrolytes. At 60 °C, the use of glyoxylic-acetal-based electrolytes improves the stability of hard carbon electrodes with respect to conventional organic-carbonate-based formulations. These results confirm that glyoxylic-acetals are promising solvents in view of the realization of safe high-performance energy storage devices.
