Abstract

The component parts of gamma-ray burst models based on neutron starquakes are assessed. The requirements for, and the properties of, neutron starquakes are reviewed. The coupling of seismic waves to Alfven waves is evaluated and the behavior of Alfven waves in the magnetosphere is investigated. An attempt is made to identify the principal sources of free energy in the interiors of old neutron stars.
