The Semantic and the Cognitive in the Text: A Problem in Equivalence

Abstract

The issue of translation equivalence must be addressed on the basis of a solid understanding of the elements of meaning that make up the text. These include the speaker's cognitive knowledge, the semantic content which is similar or identical to the speaker's communicative intent, the contextual content, & the received content. Application of this perspective to translation is considered. Any adequate translation must take semantic factors, despite the fact that many translators overlook this aspect in favor of cognitive aspects of the message. B. Annesser Murray
