Abstract

While the mainstay of prevention and control of any viral infection has historically been the use of vaccines, it is recognized that the pace of a global pandemic is likely to be such that it is unlikely that an effective vaccine will be ready for the first wave of an influenza pandemic. As such, in addition to non-pharmacological public health and infection control measures, the first line of action will be the use of antivirals. © 2008 The Author.
