Abstract

The grasshopper genus Chondracris Uvarov 1923 is revised for the first time in its entirety. On the evidence of the morphology of the phallic complex, the Afrotropical species formerly attributed to the genus are shown not to be congeneric with those occurring in Asia and the Far East. the new genus Ritchiella is erected to accommodate the five Afrotropical species: R. baumanni (Karsch 1986), R. sanguinea (Sjöstedt 1912), R. asperata (Bolívar 1881), R. uvarovi (Sjöstedt 1924) and a new species, R. rungwensis from Southern Tanzania. The genus Chondracris is restricted to the oriental region and a new species, C. bengalensis, is described from the Indian subcontinent. Evidence of dry season dormancy in the eggs of R. sanguinea is presented. © 1992 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
