Factors and Indicators to Assess Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in Public Works Procurement

Abstract

The construction industry is under obligation to address sustainability, especially, after the United Nations established 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To achieve these 17 SDGs, promoting the development of sustainable infrastructure is key to transform the behavior of the construction sector; and public procurement has been highlighted as the tool to link the success of infrastructure projects with the goals of the SDGs. However, the assessment of the performance of companies and projects against the SDGs has not been currently resolved, and research in this matter is scarce, being a topic of great relevance to be addressed. Therefore, this research, through an extensive literature review, analyzes the factors and indicators to assess the social sustainability of the SDG in public procurement of civil engineering projects. This study provides insights into the challenges regarding the implementation of the SDGs and is a point of departure for future research and development of practical solutions.
