Abstract

Wear damage to gold jewellery, in particular that caused by abrasive action with clothing or in contact with other jewellery pieces, is probably the most frequent cause of its premature repair or replacement. One reason for this is undoubtedly the lack of adequate understanding throughout the industry regarding the mechanisms of wear, and the factors which can cause an improvement in the wear resistance of gold jewellery alloys. © 1983 World Gold Council.
