Abstract
The organisation structure of the forest service of the canton of the Grisons - a matrix organisation - makes heavy demands on staff, especially in the area of communication. The multiple and widely different functions offer good potential for job satisfaction to all skill profiles. Forest districts have become larger during the restructuring process, which increases the demands on staff. Graduates of the School of Agricultural, Forest and Food Sciences in Zollikofen have the appropriate training, as long as they are given close support during the early stages of their career. The open training system gives many opportunities, but puts high demands on both employer and employee. It is important that overlaps between the different qualification levels are not too large, and that the link between training and professional experience is maintained. It is essential that young professionals are prepared for the challenges they will face. Potential staff members should have the possibility of doing an internship to find out whether this is the right job for them.
