Abstract

VoI. 16, No. 3, 1992 BOOK REVIEWS 853 interleukin-1 or related cytokmes. The induction of metallothionein by zinc, copper and iron is described by McCormick and Dieter. They have consistently observed that metallothionein induction depends on the route of metal administration and on an "indirect" induction process. It is suggested that this "indirect" effect is due to an inflammatory response, perhaps mediated by the secretion of cytokines by phagocytes. Alternatively, the respiratory burst of neutrophils in the early stages of the inflammatory response may provide the factors necessary for metallothionein induction. These two chapters thus provide additional evidence for the notion that metallothionein resembles an acute-phase reactant.
