Abstract

Spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is characterized by a sharply increasing incidence secondary to the increase in the average life span and widespread use of anticoagulation treatment. Despite data from several clinical trials conducted recently, the overall management of this devastating pathology is still controversial. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the main epidemiological and clinical aspects of spontaneous ICH, mainly focusing on an evidence-based treatment algorithm according to which patients are selected as candidates for surgery. The surgical techniques commonly employed in the treatment of ICH occupy a large part of the chapter.
