Abstract

This essay explores the normativity of democracy and the meaning of democratic politics with a focus on the concept of deliberative politics. The author proposes two main motivations driving entry into politics: a desire to be a part of something and the desire to make the world better. It is argued that deliberative choosing addresses these concerns by focusing on relationships and belonging as opposed to market forces.
