The .ABSTRACTTheimpactofInformationTechnology(IT)hascontinuedtoincreaseinallaspectsofourlives;therehasbeenincreasinginterestinresearchonthefactorsthatexplainuseracceptanceofnewtechnology.Venkateshcombinedeightofthemostpopularmodelstoformulateanewmodel,calledtheUnifiedTheoryofAcceptanceandUseofTechnology(UTAUT),whichsincethenhasbecomeoneofthemostprominentmodels.ThispapertriestovalidateamodifiedUTAUTmodelfortheBayeroUniversity,Kano.Students'registrationportalwhicheveryuniversitystudenthastouseatthebeginningofeveryacademicsessionwasusedtotestthemodel.Threehundredandsixtyeightvalidquestionnaireswereusedtovalidateresearchmodelwhichcomprisesfiveconstructsinthemodifiedmodelnamely:performanceexpectancy(PE),effortexpectancy(EE),socialinfluence(SI),facilitatingconditions(FC)andanxiety(AX).Inordertoevaluatetheinternalconsistency,convergenceanddiscernmentsvalidity,confirmatoryfactoranalysis(CFA)isrunonthemeasurementmodelandthevaluesofAverageVarianceExtracted(AVE),CompositeReliability(ρc),andCronbach'sAlpha(CA)arefoundtobesatisfactory.Thedatacollectedisanalyzedusingstructuralequationmodelingtechniques.Threemajorconstructsofthemodel-performanceexpectancy(PE),effortexpectancy(EE)andsocialinfluence(SI)–arefoundtobeinsignificantdeterminantsofregistrationportalusage,showingthatthereareanumberofsystemsthatmayneitherfitintotheUTAUTnorUTAUT2modelsbecauseoftheirspecialcharacteristics.INTRODUCTIONAstheimpactandadoptionofInformationTechnologyhascontinuedtoincreaseinallaspectsofourlives,therehasbeenincreasinginterestinresearchonthefactorsthatdriveuseracceptanceofnewtechnology.Priortotheyear2003,severaltheoreticalmodels,withrootsindifferentacademicdisciplines,appearedtryingtoaccountforthesefactors.Venkatesh,Morris,Davis,andDavis(2003)combinedeightofthemostpopularmodelstoformulateanewmodel,calledtheUnifiedTheoryofAcceptanceandUseofTechnology(UTAUT),whichsincethenhasbecomeoneofthemostprominentmodelsinInformationSystems.TherehavebeenseveralempiricalvalidationsofUTAUTwithseveralITsystemsandindiversesettings,countriesandcultures(Venkatesh,Thong,&Xu,2012).Manyofthesehavevalidatedthefourconstructsofthemodel.TherehavebeenafewattemptstovalidateUTAUTforanumberofITsystemsinNigeria(Abdulwahab&Zulkhairi,2012.ThispapertriestovalidateUTAUTmodelusingBayeroUniversity,Kanoregistrationportal,popularlycalledthe"myBuk"portal,whicheveryuniversitystudenthastouseatthebeginningofeveryacademicsessioninordertogetfullyenrolledandregistered.TheITsystemsisconsideredasacaseofamandatorysystemthathastobeusedratherthanvoluntarysystemsforwhichtherecouldbeanalternative.SuchasAutomaticTellerMachine(ATM),forexamplewhereauserhasthealternativeofgoingintothebankinghallanddoinganyoftheATMtransactionsthere.RelatedWorkThereareseveraltheoreticalmodels,withrootsindifferentacademicdisciplinesthathaveappearedtryingtoexplainthefactorsthatdetermineuseracceptanceofnewtechnology.TheyincludetheTheoryofReasonedAction(TRA)FishbeinandAjzen,(1975),drawnfromsocialpsychology,theTechnologyAcceptanceModel(TAM),(Davis,1989),whichpredictstheacceptanceandusageofInformationTechnologyandtheMotivationalModel(MM),(Davisetal.,1992),whichusesgeneralmotivationtheorytoexplainbehavior.OthersaretheTheoryofPlannedBehavior(TPB),(Ajzen,1991),thatisanextensionofTRA,theCombinedTAMandTPB(C-TAM-TPB),(Taylor&Todd,1995),thatisahybridofTPBandTAM,andModelofPCUtilization(MPCU),(Thompsonetal.,1991),thatisderivedfromTriandisTheoryofHumanBehavior.TheInnovationDiffusionTheory(IDT),(Rogers,1995),usedinexplainingtheadoptionofinnovationsandtheSocialCognitiveTheory(SCT),(Bandura,1986),arealsopowerfultheoriesthathavebeenusedtoexplainuseracceptanceandusageoftechnology.TheyaretheeightmodelsthatVenkateshetal.(2003)combinedtoformulatetheUnifiedTheoryofAcceptanceandUseofTechnology(UTAUT)thathaswidelybeenvalidatedforseveralITsystemsindiversesettings,countriesandcultures.
