Abstract

Student engagement in higher education has been studied considering its diversity of purposes that include promoting academic performance as well as citizenship development. Through a quantitative methodology, this article presents an instrument that takes into account all these aspects to measure student engagement and that has been tested for construct validity and statistical reliability. The findings (N = 108) propose an instrument with 30 items, distributed in 11 student engagement factors, which, in turn, are grouped in three dimensions with promising reliability and validity levels. Such results allows for the continuing development of this instrument and for future research with a more comprehensive perspective on student engagement that along with including academic and personal development, which are commonly studied, emphasizes the connection with citizenship development and its impact on the quality assurance systems currently in place.
