Abstract

Development of biomass waste for alternative adsorbent with low cost, high effectiveness, and easy obtaining raw materials has been studied. In this work, the feasibility of using the modified (SSzC) and unmodified (SSzM) Salacca zalacca seeds powder investigated as a novel of low-cost adsorbent. They were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectoscopy (FTIR) to obtain information of functional groups on material surface. The result demonstated that SSzM and SSzChas similarity of spectra with several wave number shift and disparity of peak intensity. Performance both of adsorbens were examined to remove methylene blue (MB) from aqueous solutions. The processeswere conducted in a batch system at ambient temperature (30°C) with 700 rpm of agitating speed. Adsorption feasibility both SSzM and SSzCwere carried out as a function of experimental parameters condition such as variated contact timeand initial MB concentration. The experimental result showed that both SSzM and SSzC have good performance of MB in all experiment, SSzC showed higher adsorption capacity than SSzM. The result showed that 1 g of SSzM was found to remove 97.90% of 50 mL methylene blue 100 ppm, while SSzC gave absorption efficiency was about 98.48% at the same condition. Adsorption capacity of SSzM and SSzC were evaluated and found to be 4,895 mg/g and 4.924 mg/g, respectively.
