Abstract
Temporomandibular joint ankylosis: results of treatment by a gap arthroplasty. Temporomandibular joint ankylosis treatment is challenging given its risks of recurrence and complications. Material and method: This case series aimed to report the results of the treatment of temporomandibular joint ankylosis by gap arthroplasty in 8 patients in the Stomatology and maxillofacial Surgery Department, CHU Sanou Souro, Bobo-Dioulasso (Burkina Faso). Results: In 7 patients, the mouth opening amplitude ranged between 30 and 45 mm after a mean followup duration of 9.3 years. One patient presented a reankylosis after 9 months of follow-up. Facial growth impairment and an open bite occlusion were noted in two patients respectively at 9 and 20 years after a bilateral gap arthroplasty. None of the patients presented a facial palsy. Discussion: Gap arthroplasty is an effective method with a low related morbidity for the treatment temporomandibular joint ankylosis in adult. Its results are less good in the child given higher riks of reankylosis and facial growth impairments. © SFCO, 2013.
