Abstract

We study the interface states formed in a heterostructure composed of two semi-infinite two-dimensional photonic crystals with different filling fractions. Photonic band structure calculations by means of a supercell technique show that localized interface states are absent in this simple heterostructure; they can be created either by lateral lattice slipping or by increasing the interface separation. © 2001 The American Physical Society.
