Abstract

In this study, it was aimed to determine the level of nutritional literacy in adults and to investigate its relationship with attitudes towards healthy eating and Body Mass Index (BMI). This cross-sectional and descriptive study included 750 volunteers between the ages of 20-65 living in Turkey. As a data collection tool; Sociodemographic information form, Adult Literacy Assessment Tool (ALAT) and Healthy Nutrition Attitude Scale (HNAS) were used. The average age of the participants is 27.10±8.70 years and the BMI is 23.45±4.59 kg/m2 and the BMI of men is higher than the value of women (respectively; 26.11±3.80 kg/m2 and 22.67±4.52 kg/m2). It was found that 67.3% of the participants had an attitude towards a highly healthy nutrition, and 83.7% had sufficient nutrition and 16.3% had borderline literacy in terms of nutritional literacy. Literacy levels of individuals with weak and ideal weight are higher. It has been concluded that nutritional literacy positively affects healthy eating attitude and BMI.
