Abstract

This article analyses different aspects of Lope de Vega s plays using new digital methods. In this way, new written tools are presented to analyse metrical aspects of the texts from a distant perspective. In particular, the rhythm of the octosyllable is an important mark that can indicate authorship and in some cases also the literary genre, applying different methods of statistical analysis to the different frequency of the rhythmic patterns of the octosyllable. Finally, the authors show that also at the level of the characters in a play (in this case El castigo sin venganza) there can be differences in the use of the different octosyllables. The distant reading of metre therefore produces promising results for the analysis of authorship, debates on literary genre and the analysis of specific characters.
