Abstract

This is a review of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics as related to processes of crack growth in ductile and semi-ductile structural metals. The topics discussed include asymptotic and numerical results on the stress analysis of cracks, J Integral methods for the onset of crack extension, microstructural processes of brittle and ductile fracture and their relation to macroscopic fracture toughness, and models for stable crack growth.
