Abstract

In Africa, market gardening is often considered as a good solution to supply the crowded cities in vegetables. This intensive agriculture is very dynamic, but presents some dangers, as the non-qualified workforce manipulates delicate products: fertilizers and chemical pesticides. Even if the production quantity is good, its quality remains under doubt as pesticide treatments are uncontrolled. In Lomé, market gardening is conducted by a young population of men, women and children who are poorly educated. Cultivated species are very diverse and the use of pesticides is widespread. Due to high pressure on land, cultivated areas are regressing which could lead, in the short term, to supply problems for Lomé City.
