Abstract

Volume 3 deals with the transcription and translation of genetic information and the products of both processes in prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. The book signifies the advancement of molecular biology from the study of bacteria and their viruses to the consideration of events and entities in eukaryotic organisms. Reverse transcription is reviewed from the point of view of its theoretical importance for molecular biology and its practical importance in cancer research. Translation, i.e. protein biosynthesis, is analyzed in the light of knowledge of numerous inhibitors of individual reaction steps in the overall sequence. The transcription of transfer RNA is surveyed in detail as one aspect of transcription of genetic information. Thalassemia and Bence Jones proteins are selected as examples of molecular pathology in eukaryotes. Finally the nature of mitochondrial DNA in neoplastic cells is discussed as one contribution to the molecular biology of cancer.
