Soot samples and wipe tests from PCB were analyzed by high-resoln. gas chromatog-mass spectroscopy. In an accidental PCB fire, where oil-filled capacitors burned with PCB-filled capacitors, PCDFs were the major polychlorinated products formed. In another capacitor fire, probably caused by elec. malfunction, polychlorinated biphenylenes (PCBPs) were the major products, but smaller amts. of PCDFs and polychlorinated pyrenes (PCPYs) were also formed. This is the 1st report where PCBPs and PCPYs have been identified in incineration products. Thermal destruction of PCB in a rotary cement kiln gave no indication of formation of PCDFs or other polychlorinated products. [on SciFinder(R)]
