Abstract
The purpose of this study was to characterize the perception and the handling of the rapport of strength, in players involved in a badminton learning task: the "Banco game". The study was carried out within the theoretical and methodological framework of the "course of action" (Theureau, 1992), according to the main assumptions of the situated cognition paradigm. The participants were three students of a faculty of sport sciences, who volunteered to participate as player in the study. Videotaped data was gathered from three matches of "Banco game" and then supplemented by verbalization data from self-confrontation interviews carried out a posteriori with each player. The verbal protocols and observational data were coded according to the semiotic analysis method of the course of action framework. The analysis showed that (a) the evolution of the players'perception of the rapport of strength during the matches was characterized by two main features, (b) the players'courses of action revealed two typical forms of strategy to win the game. These issues are illustrated and then discussed considering (a) the particular meaningful characteristic of the "Banco" points, (b) the dynamical knowledge building process during the matches, and (c) the specific constraints of the "Banco game".
