Abstract

Black pigments on pottery in the "black over red", "black and white over red" and "polished black interior" styles from the Quebrada de Humahuaca (Jujuy, Argentina) were analyzed. Composition analysis of black pigments was performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Carbonaceous materials and magnetite were identified on black pigment samples from both "black over red" and "black and white over red" styles. Only graphitized carbon was found on "polished black interior" samples. No manganese-based materials were detected.
