Abstract
Buffer zone frequently offered to be a solution of conflict between biodiversity conservation inside conser- vation area with human interest in its surrroundings. Mount Merbabu National Park is one of national parks in Java Island that have been threatened by surrounding communities. One of solutions that would be applied is establishment of buffer zone. This research was aimed to identify bio-physics potentials, sosio-economics and aspiration of surrounding communities and local government and national park ma- nagement policies as a basic for formulating proper buffer zone alternatives. Structured interview with respondents and focus group discussion were applied for collecting primary data and formulating buffer zone alternatives. This research resulted five tipes of buffer zone for Mount Merbabu National Park, namely: (1) establishment buffer zone in private land surrounding national park; (2) limited utilization of national park area through community based management; (3) traditional harvesting of non timber forest prodact; (4) Utilization of environmental services of water and ecotourism; and (5) non land based econ- omic buffer zone.
