Abstract
The article analyses modern trends aimed at shaping urban space are significant the phenomena of which are the garden and the park. The article provides examples of sociocultural situations in cities and identifies problematic aspects in their development. Using the example of the cities of Kyiv and Odesa, a comparative analysis of trends in the formation of modern urban space. Common problems for modern cities are the uneven development of urban space, degradation existing plantings, development of free green areas. Areas of modern cities, characterized by the highest concentration of public activities, need the development of a recreational system and improvement of the ecological quality of the urban environment. However, at the moment, it is precisely in these areas that the potential for the development of public spaces has been exhausted, and landscaping is absent or minimal. In this regard, there is a need to develop conceptual principles for the formation of green public spaces that would meet the conditions of sustainable urban development. The authors examined the conceptual foundations of the urban garden and park as holistic phenomena with an emphasis on their aesthetic and sociocultural interpretation. Their role in the spatial expression of the essence of the city is analysed. Based on the analysis, it is concluded that attention to the real needs of people is one of the main criteria for a successful urban public space. The semantic unity of the park space with the city space makes it possible to create an image of a communication center in the minds of citizens. And at the same time, the artificially created image of the place and the true attitude towards it creates a contradiction among the townspeople and provokes the disintegration of the image of public space.
