Abstract

Since its separation from India in 1947 Pakistan has built up its textile industry from 4 factories to the point where it is producing 5% of the world's clothing textiles. The textile industry is the largest industry in Pakistan, it accounts for 75% of manufactured exports, 35% of industrial employment and 30% of industrial production. Pakistan is the fifth largest cotton producer in the world. About two thirds of production is for export in the form of cotton yarn, cotton fabric, clothing and knitwear. Pakistan operates 7% of the cotton spinning machinery in Asia and invested heavily in the last 10 years. However modernization has slowed in recent years. In weaving also the rate of modernization is slower than other Asian countries. The greatest problems facing the industry in Pakistan are low quality and productivity, lack of standards and lack of professional training. Concentration on marketing, technology and quality is required.
