Abstract

A Lagrangian finite element algorithm is described for solving two-dimensional, time-dependent free surface flows, in which moving contact lines are simulated by allowing local slip and the use of a 'Tanner Law'. The method is implemented using structured meshes, which are locally refined in the contact line regions, and periodic remeshing to control element distortion. The benchmark problem of capillary motion between parallel horizontal plates is solved to illustrate the accuracy of the method and its applicability to flows of engineering relevance.
