Abstract

The preparation of a variety of (n5-vinylcyclopentadienyl)metal type monomers including (n5-vinylCp)M(CO)2, where M = Co, Rh, Ir, (n5-vinylCp)W(CO)3CH3, (n5-vinylCp)M(CO)2N0, where M = Cr, Mo, W, (n5-vinylCp) (n5-Cp)TiCl2, (n5-vinylCp)CuPEt3and (n5-isopropenylcyclopentadienyl)metal type monomers including (n5-isopropenylCp)M(CO)2N0, where M = Cr, Mo, W, (n5-isopropenylCp)M(CO) 2, where M = Co’, Rh, (n5-isopropenylCp)M(CO) 3CH3and (n5-isopropenylCp)2Sn have been prepared. The homopolymerization kinetics of (n5-vinylCp)W(CO)3CH3and (n5-vinylCp)Cr(CO)2NO were studied. Copolymerization of several n5-vinylCp monomers with styrene, methyl acrylate, acrylonitrile and N-vinylpyrrolidone were conducted using radical initiation. From the reactivity ratios, values of the Alfrey-Price Qe parameters were obtained, illustrating that all of the metallic monomers studied were exceptionally electron rich. Cationic initiation of the (n5-isopropenylCp)-metal type monomers gave low molecular weight homopolymers and copolymers at best. The syntheses of 1,1´-bis(3-aminoethyl)ferrocene and 1,1´-bis (3-hydroxyethyl)ferrocene and their interfacial polycondensation with both diacid chlorides and diisocyanates was conducted. These two monomers were compared to their corresponding 1,1´-bis(a-substituted)ferrocene analogs which had been previously studied in polycondensations. © 1986 IUPAC
